city. >> it was rented from an owner who had a nice villa there and several other out buildings as well. >> lieutenant colonel andrew wood is a 24 year u.s. special forces veteran who worked on security for u.s. personnel in libya for 6 months before the september 11th, 2012, benghazi attack. >> not a lot of sefkt like in any resident they are not a fortress. >> inside the walls are four buildings one is a large residence with a number of bedrooms in it. another resident has a can tina where the staff meets just across the way is what they call their tact kel operations center filled with offices for security staff, phones and security monitors. finally the bare rocks, a small house by the main house of the compound. it will house a libyan security force. >> any viewers who traveled around europe and asia probably think one of those heavily guarded fortresses where you go to get your visa.

that's not what we are talking about here. >> correct. i think the correct term for it is embassy property it wasn't fortified. >> libya october 20th, 2011, colonel qaddafi is captured and killed by rebels in his home town. with qaddafi gone even stevens officially named ambassador. he will come to benghazi often. the state department upgrades the physical security at that property. charlene lamb of the state department. >> we extended the height of the owed outer wall with mason ry concrete barbed wire. >> inside the large residents fortified safe haven is built. you enter through a heavy metal grill with several locks on it. >> tell me about the safe haven. >> bars on the windows. building a jail cell you are going to get inside. it's a delay until you can get

oh oo return to go the investigation. we told you how libya after the death of moammar kwad any was an unstable and dangerous place. the center lines was mostly libyan on libyan. in the spring of 2012 that would change. americans and their allies in libya found themselves increasingly in the cross hairs. >> april 6th, 2012. >> an id is placed on the compound's north gate. no one is injured in either incident. that's not the case five days

later: grit britain sir dominique is ambushd in benghazi. he is in first but two of his security aids aren't. andrew woods was the site team commander in libya. >> i actually conducted an investigation a couple days afterwards walked the ground took photographs they knew what they were doing and it was an assassination attempt with skilled operators. as i could see it. >> all told there have been more than 230 security incidents in libya in the past year. ambassador stevens grows more and more worried and says so in a series of tables set to washington like this one on june 25th. en entitled libya's trag gill security deteriorates as tribal rivalries power plays and

extremism intensifies. they are targeting international organizations and foreign interests. that's why wood and eric nordstrom regional security officer implored the state department to keep woods ssp force in the country beyond it's scheduled august departure. >> we weren't requesting additional security. we were requesting to keep the security that we had. that was being taken away. >> you want to keep your team on the ground? the team that was in place already? >> my team was only a small part. >> mobile security detachment team. >> a lot of those were ex green paw rays ex navy seals. there was three k teams on the ground there. >> august 5th, 2012, state decides not to keep the sst in libya the msd team is being

reduced as well. >> why do you think they request this? >> i don't know. i really don't know. >> former u.s. ambassador to the united nations john bowman. >> i think what was motivating the state department if we had security that would have been truly appropriate it would have been an admission that conditions on the ground in libya were not safe. that would have violated the world view that this had been an administration success. >> august 8th just three-days after the state department pulls the heavy security teams from benghazi ambassador stevens sends another cable. what we have seen are not random crimes. chr discriminate defense. wood and military site security team would leave the country. >> how did you feel about the security situation when you left? >> i didn't like it.

i said as much. my terns were specifically for benghazi. >> stevens was a great diplomat and being a great diplomat in a dynamic place like libya means taking care of lots of different things. >> council to the libyan government david fury is a former state department official who knew stevens. >> he was concerned about some of the development in libya i think he was being a very wise careful diplomat and taking note of all of the things that were happening. >> the u.s. embassy in cairo egypt. they scale the walls and burned the american flag angry over it produced in cairo. all is quiet at the compound in benghazi. still sometime before 6:00 p.m.

>> bret: many of you may have >> he started with all of the available information from u.s. government briefings diplomatic parps, e net and other docume s documents. all together he reconstructed what happened that night. now he has new revelations with new information that fills in this troubling story even more. >> september 11th 20127:30 p.m. the u.s. ambassador to libya chris steve convenients takstev last meeting with the turkish council general. it ends after an hour. he escorts him to the main gate. he makes small talk in arabic

with the guard. he retires to his bedroom for the night. still no kind of any kind of spontaneous dem stwrags over the web video. the obama administration later suggests it escalated into a deadly riot. stephens with information manager shawn smith and four diplomatic security special agents. another agent at the tackle operations center. 9:40 p.m. some guards could hear up the street explosives going on and people yelling and chanting. the mob of attackers break through the main dagate a week point in the defense of the mission. they move on here to the under staffed libya barracks they storm the place torch it and light up around it and they move on. they used radical flags some wearing afghan guards and have foreign accents. an agent cease and monitor

scores of men into the compound at the annex a mile away which fox news confirmed was a cia installation tyrone woods a former navy seal can hear shots being fired. fox news again i ever griffin they asked from cia superiors. they say it is the first of two such requests they would make. the cia said no one at any level in the cia told anybody not to help those in need. they are inaccurate. security agents consulate are sounding the alarm, too. >> security agents working in the operations center immediately activated the eminent danger notification system. >> state department official sharyl lean lamb was working that night in washington so she could follow the events in real

time. >> he also alerted the quick ee action security teams stationed nearby. the libyan grig gayed the embassy. they would do. live pictures back to washington. back here in a main resident. he came from his bedroom and brings him along with shawn smith to this room in the safe haven. a dark windowless closet and then outside a locked gate. he radios others as to his whereabouts. the scene of the compound is erupting in gun fire and explosion. at this point there are 7 americans at three different locations ambassador stevens and two others in the main residence two special agents at the second resident cafeteria and here in a

tack cal operation center two more agents. attackers all around. inside the main residence the attackers come in here and they ransack the place and go for the locked gates. they look inside it's dark they can't see anything. then they try the locks. they can't open it up. inside agent ubin has a gun on them ready to shoot if need be. as lieutenant colonel andrew woods says the safe haven is only safe for a short time. >> it's a delay for an aggressor but it has to rely on someone to come in and rescue him as well. >> that someone might have been his elite security team but they have been pulled out of the country. either way stevens smith and ubin was trapped by die bog cal killers who poured diesel fuel around the house light it and leave. >> when we come back the trapped americans try desperately to escape. ♪

a oo before the break gregg palkot told you how terrorists over ran the compound in benghazi libya. a handful of americans caught by surprise pinned down in three different locations. three of these men including ambassador chris stephens have locked themselves into a so-called safe haven in one of the buildings. the attackers can't break in but they set the place ablaze. the safe haven had become a fiery jail in the middle of a shooting gallery. once again from benghazi here is gregg palkot. >> september 11th sometime after 10:00 p.m. the compound is under heavy attack. this militia member safdz there. >> you can't heal anything from the violence implosion you can't even take your breath away. i can't even move.

so it is like organized attacks. >> meanwhile it is black with thick smoke and fumes. he moved to a bathroom within the safe area which had a window. they try to open it but it doesn't help. there is just too much smoke. they try to leave the safe haven and take their chances with the armed attackers who have take oefrn the compound. >> jimmy opens and crawls out of but stevens and smith do not crawl out after him. even though he can barely see barely breathe he goes back in. he goes back in and out several times and he is over come with smoke. sources tell fox news there is another request to go and assist the people in the compound. they say they are told to stay put. the cia says it never happened. we can say with confidence the

agency reacted quickly to them during the terrible evening in benghazi. at the compound three of the diplomatic security agents make their way to the main residents. they fall into the residents on their hands and knees feeling their way through the building to try to find their two colleagues they find smith and pull him out of the building. skwus combr 1 -- just before 11:00 p.m. woods and five others are said to ignore their orders and break to the consulate they bring with them 16 libyans from the february 17th brigade. some surround the compound the others go in. they are unable to find stevens. they can no longer hold the perimeter. >> the attack was so strong so we were calling for backup and backup didn't come. >> the agents carrying smith's body pull inile into an armored

vehicle and drive away. almost immediately the crowd fires on them throws two grenades under their vehicle. they take direct fire from ak-47 two feet away despite heavy damage they keep rolling. several blocks away they hit more traffic in a benghazi neighborhood. the car careens over the middle divider pushes forward against opposing traffic makes it to the annex and hope for safety. midnight 2 hours after the attack began a quick reaction from the u.s. embassy in tripoli leaves benghazi. glen daughterty will be fending off heavy fire. the battle is on again back at the annex. hitting the place with ak-47 fire and rocket pro felled grenades forcing them further back in the annex compound. according to fox's again i ever griffin another call is made for military backup.

sources say the request is diffused. special forces are moved to southernity t part. they are concerned about putting them in harm's way without a clear picture of intelligence. there are jet fighters and attack helicopters. there was fear of civilian casualty and collateral damage. lieutenanters entered the building find the body of stevens slumped on the floor. they don't know who he is they drag him out through a window. his eyes are dazed his face smoke stained seemingly lifeless. someone says he is breathing the crowd is relieved cheering allah akbar god is great. around 1:00 a.m. ambassador stevens is brought by car here to the benghazi medical center where doctors try desperately to resuscitate him for 45 minutes. they say he died of severe

asphyxiation. the fight has been going on for hours. a second is sent as a quick reaction force arrives at the benghazi airport. the libyan officials delay them for 45 minutes negotiating over who will escort them. they arrive at the annex around 3:00 a.m. around 4:00 a.m. this annex compound is hit by fore wave of attacks it is described as precise mortar fiyhrieing on th roofs it is dangerous and deadly. injured in the attack david ubin the man who tried to save stevens and smith. two other americans are killed. former navy seals glen daughterty and woods who weren't rooftop with the annex. they were hit by a mortar. they didn't go down without a fight. national security correspondent jennifer griffin. we know from witnesses and

sources that spoke to the witnesses that glen daughterty and tyrone woods the machine gun they were on the roof was taped in blood. they continued firing and they continued fighting after they were hit. >> a decision is made to evacuate the whole enterprise. they support the americans through the airport. september 12th 8:30 a.m. the americans evacuate on two flights the second plane leaves with the remaining americans on board. the bodies of ambassador stevens sma shawn smith agent daughterty and woods. >> chris stevens was the first ambassador killed on duty in more than 3 decades. the story moves back to washington. new details on the obama administration's reaction. was it the fog of war an attempted cover up or something else? special report investigates after the break.

firestorm. here is chief white house correspondent ed henry. september 11th as the attack was playing out e-mails in high ranking officials in the pentagon and even the white house. 5:00 p.m. eastern time the diplomatic mission is under attack. 49 minutes later 4:54 p.m. firing at the u.s. diplomatic mission in benghazi has been stopped and the compound has been cleared. at 5:00 p.m. the president, vice president and defense secretary leon pineda meet in the oval office. >> that's about an hour after the attack began. at that time they would have had a drone and a video feed from a drone being sent back to washington. >> fox news national security correspondent jennifer griffin. >> the problem is don't forget that video from a drone is taken from an incredible distance, you don't have clarity as to who on

the ground you see figures moving. it is hard to tell friendly from foe. >> 6:47 p.m. a terror group tied to al qaeda claimed responsibility fon facebook and twitter. administration officials later say a posting on social media is not in and of itself evidence. 11:57 p.m. another chilling e-mail subject line benghazi shelter location also under attack. the next morning september 12th president obama addresses the nation from the rose garden. what he says or doesn't say will become a hotly debated issue over the next days and weeks. >> since our founding the united states has been a nation that respects all faiths. we reject efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. there is no justification this type of step spirals. >> with those words he seems to be saying ambassador chris stevens and other americans were

killed in a spontaneous riot because of the anti islam video not terrorist attacks. he uses the term terror in a more general sense after he recalls the september 11th, 2001, terror attack. >> no acts of terror will shake. >> it is a huge distinction by obama critics like mike stein. >> there are always reasons to riot in the muslim world. >> he believes the president was trying to dodge responsibility by the attacks by chalking it up to sudden irrational out of proportion outrage we often here about in the husband limb world. >> i happen to be in the oval office once and president bush gave a line if it's always something if it's not the crew said it's the cartoons. might riot over the danish cartoons or sudanese

just a spontaneous demonstration about the anti islam video. >> there is no justification, none at all, for responding to this video with violence. >> white house press secretary jay carney explicitly blames the video the next day. >> these protests were in reaction to a video. we have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack. >> later in the day the transfer of the remain ceremony clinton talks again about the video. >> we have seen rage and violence directed at american embassies ore an awful internet video that we had nothing to do with. >> the father of one of those killed later tells fox news clinton told him personally they were going to arrest and prosecute the producer of the video. the next day california

authorities called the man who produced that video in for questioning and march him in front of tv cameras. >> u.s. ambassador of the united nations susan rice goes on 5 sunday talk shows repeating the same story each time. >> it was not a preplanned pre-meditated attack. it was a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired in cairo as a consequence of the video. >> they panicked. they panicked. >> former white house chief of staff john sununu is helping with romney's campaign. >> it is a political reaction from the white house that prepared itself to establish a narrative of a president getting ready of the threat of terrorism using the death of bin laden to focus on that. waking up one morning finding out the terrorism on 9-11 of this year was back full-fledged and even killing a u.s.
